I’m Catholic, but I'm not practicing.  May I still attend Mass and receive Holy Communion?

You are most welcome to attend Mass.  However, as Catholics, we fully participate in the celebration of the Eucharist when we receive Holy Communion.  We are encouraged to receive Communion devoutly and frequently.  In order to be properly disposed to receive Holy Communion, participants should not be conscious of grave sin and normally should have fasted for one hour.  A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord without prior sacramental confession except for a grave reason where there is no opportunity for confession.  In this case, the person is to be mindful of the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition, including the intention of confessing as soon as possible.  A frequent reception of the Sacrament of Penance is encouraged for all.

I’m not Catholic, may I still attend Mass?

You are most welcome to attend Mass regardless of your faith.

I’m not Catholic, may I receive Holy Communion?

Holy Communion, or The Eucharist, is the most intimate expression of our Catholic faith.  Catholics believe that the host is literally the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divintiy of Jesus Christ, transformed from bread by the priest who is celebrating the Mass.  Most evangelical Christians think of communion as merely symbolic, and they are not as strict about receiving as are Catholics and Orthodox Christians who believe it is a Sacrament and the true presence of Jesus Christ.  So, if you are not Catholic, you may not receive Holy Communion.  However, those who are not receiving Jesus Christ truly present in the Eucharist are invited to approach the altar with their hands crossed over their chests for a special blessing.
